Typography I Process Book (2024)

For our final project in Typography I, we were assigned to create a process book of everything we did in the class over the semester. This project didn’t just give us a good opportunity to create good documentation habits throughout the semester, but it also challenged us to get creative with bookmaking, binding, assembling pages in spreads, formatting, and much more. This book was one of my favorite projects to complete, and I’m very happy with the outcome.

The patterns decorating the sides of this book are traditional Sami bandweaving patterns. Bandweaving has been an integral part of traditional Sami craft (duodji) for thousands of years. My family are descended from Ume Sami (by the Ume river), and I thought it would be interesting to find a small way to honor this heritage through the design of this book. Since bandweaving is a textile art, I sewed red embroidery thread through the cover of the book to create an eye-catching pattern and a unique texture.

Sample Spreads

Assignment 1 - Monogram (1)

This was the spread for my Monogram assignment, showing off the monogram I was most proud of. I took inspiration from Alexey Brodovich’s full page spreads for his work with Harper’s Bazaar.

Assignment 1 - Monogram (2)

Since our full assignment was to create 20 monograms, I designed this spread to emulate the feeling of just making monograms over and over again, always coming up with new ideas and thoughts in the process.

Assignment 4 - Modular Alphabet

Assignment 2 - Form/Counterform
