Modular Alphabet (2024)

This font was created by me for my typography class. We were assigned to create an entire alphabet out of shapes we created, arranged in a grid.

The shape I created is the negative space created by two semicircles and a square. After creating our font, we were encouraged to assign a color code and to create mockups with it to see how legible our font would be in the real world.

I did a lot of experimentation with the color explorations for this font, since I felt the four shapes held a lot of potential. I wanted to contrast the “spookiness” of the font with bright and cheerful colors (I was told that the shape I chose resembled a bat wing). I also did some work with the “flower” shape that some of the counters made, and considered how I might integrate it with the font. However, I decided to maintain the integrity of the font itself.
